The topic of the post is: Explore the beaches near Visakhapatnam. The coastline of the Indian subcontinent juts into the Indian Ocean. This coastline has three different oceans caressing it on its three sides, a unique, unparalleled feature not found anywhere else on Earth. The beach becomes an integral part of the equation where there is the Ocean. For a long time, the beaches of Goa and Kerala enticed travellers from India and worldwide.

As travel conditions improved, travellers searched for unchartered and unexplored beaches, leading them to the beaches of Maharashtra and Odisha. As years passed, the journey continued, and in this regard, I would like to describe my travels centred on my quest to explore the beaches near Visakhapatnam.

The beaches of Andhra Pradesh are scenic, rustic, unspoilt and vividly beautiful. While the facilities are basic compared to the more recognised beaches nationwide, for the nature lover and true beach lover, these beaches will fill his soul with content. The blue waters of the Bay of Bengal lapping on the golden/silver sands under the casuarina trees are incredibly soul-stirring.

This post centres around my concept of exploring the beaches near Visakhapatnam, easily accessible from the city, a well-connected and prominent tourist hub in this region.
Visakhapatnam is the second largest city on the East Coast of India and the headquarters for the Indian Navy Eastern Naval Command. Visakhapatnam has the oldest shipbuilding yard and the only natural harbour on the Eastern coast of India. The city is also known as the City of Destiny.

First, I will discuss the beaches of Visakhapatnam. The first and most prominent beach that comes to mind is RK Beach.
Ramakrishna Beach
Rk Beach. A lot has been done to develop the waterfront at this beach and make it pleasing to visitors. There are museums, artefacts, and numerous other sights to see. However, in the process, it has lost its natural sheen of laid-back vibes. This is a natural process and is bound to happen, considering that the beach is one of the most accessible beaches in Visakhapatnam.

RK Beach (Rama Krishna Beach) gets its name from the RK Mission ashram on the beach road. This ashram has been an integral part of the beach for decades, so it is aptly named after it.

Being easily accessible, people are bustling, especially in the evening. However, the mornings are therapeutic and calm with the cool breeze, and watching the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal is a visual treat to the eyes.

Bheemunipatnam Beach
Continuing with my quest to explore the beaches near Visakhapatnam, I travel to Bheemunipatnam Beach, which has been of central interest to local travellers for decades. Located 30 km from Visakhapatnam, this beach has basic facilities. In the past, it was primarily a fishing village. The administration has given the beach a facelift to make it more traveller-friendly.
It is the meeting point of the Gosthani River and the Bay of Bengal and is also home to historic Dutch settlements. The beach is extended in length and has a unique beauty. The waves are gentler, making it more conducive to swimming than RK Beach.

Enjoy the tranquil waters of the Bay of Bengal, surrounded by coconut farms, palm groves, and a laid-back feel. It is a popular weekend getaway spot and a preferred day outing choice for many.

Marine Drive stretch of Visakhapatnam
Coastal Stretch. The stretch between the city limits and Bheemunipatnam is a lovely road to drive or cycle. Alongside the entire stretch, one can enjoy the vistas of the ocean. This stretch truly gives the feel of a rustic, idyllic Mediterranean setting.

I recommend a visit out on this stretch with time to spare. En route, one can visit Kailasagiri, Tenetti Park, Kaarthekavanam, Thotlakonda Buddhist excavations, and Bavikonda.

You can park your vehicle and walk down to the beach that runs alongside it. It is very safe at all times and incredibly pretty. I spend much time on this stretch whenever I wish to slow down during my stressed-out weeks or to improve my fitness by cycling.

Rushikonda Beach
Rushikonda Beach. It has been the major attraction for travellers visiting Visakhapatnam for decades. My journey exploring the beaches near Visakhapatnam brought me here sooner than expected, though I must be candid that I don’t particularly like the beach. The beach attracts many visitors due to its pristine location, availability of water sports, and assorted restaurants.

The land’s curve is spectacular to see from a height as the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal come inwards. An alternate road skirting the main highway and circumambulating the local hillock has recently been developed. This enhances the feel of the ocean as one looks outwards. There is still much to do regarding this beach’s eating spots, parking, and general infrastructure.

Moving away from Visakhapatnam, I would like to mention this next beach as I move outwards along the coastline to explore the beaches near Visakhapatnam.
Appikonda Beach
Appikonda Beach is a pristine beach on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city. It is not part of the tourist circuit. Widely known for its scenic beauty and crystal-clear waters, Appikonda Beach is a delightful experience. Surrounded by casuarina trees, it is a gem for those looking for tranquillity and the silence of the waves.

The landscape makes one fall in love with the beach, while the deep blue colour of the sea provides a stunning backdrop for amazing photographs. The golden sands, set against the blue waters and verdant hills backdrop, create a picturesque landscape.

From Appikonda, I venture towards Addripeta Beach, some distance away.
Addripeta Beach
Addripeta Beach is among the top 10 beaches of Andhra Pradesh. It is situated 49 km from the city of Kakinada. It is a petty long breach curving gracefully, guarded by casuarina groves and the admirable hues of the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal.

The beach is a perfect example of the unspoilt beauty of the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Clear waters, silver sands and glittery waves make the beach very tempting. The long stretch of seashore surrounded by trees on one side looks like a painted landscape and offers an unforgettable relief from mundane life.

This post is incomplete; instead, it’s just the start of a series as I spend time on my quest and zeal to explore the beaches near Visakhapatnam. I shall document them so that travellers visiting this region can experience the delightful feeling of walking barefoot on these little gems on the Bay of Bengal as the waves gently lap at their feet.

What is my blog about ?
My blog focuses on nature-based places and offbeat destinations. India has an abundance of these kinds of places. Read about the forest magic of Odisha out here, or read an in-depth story about the trek to Sandakphu to see the Kanchenjunga up close. A visit to Haflong, the only recognized hill station in Assam, is recommended. I did visit beaches in Benagl as well. If the word Bakkhali triggers your imagination, then read it here.

My thoughts on the beaches near Visakhapatnam
In the short time I spent in this region, I would say that the beaches have great potential. The laidback vibes, the sun and sand combination, and the rural rustic beauty of these beaches will surely delight all who come exploring out here and are willing to venture beyond the common beaches listed in every travel journal. Stay tuned while I document more amazing beaches in this region.
