Experiencing the Golden Pagoda, Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh

Blog Topic: Golden Pagoda, Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh. India’s remotest state is the first Indian soil to greet the rising sun. Located at the northeastern tip of India, with borders touching China, Bhutan, and Myanmar, this beautiful land boasts a dazzling array of flora and fauna sure to amaze any traveller. The capital of Arunachal Pradesh is Itanagar, a rapidly emerging city in the North East. I wanted to visit this land, so I planned an extensive road trip to East Arunachal.

Arunachal has always been close to my heart; a sense of fascination is evoked whenever I recall my road trips to this region. I dream of seeing the dawn rise in India before anywhere else in the country. Travel to explore India’s first village. I listen to the legendary tales of Lord Parshuram, and also hike to a very elusive lake in the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary

Arunachal Road Trip Itinerary

Disregarding the map of Arunachal Pradesh, I divide the state into four central regions for ease of travel: West Arunachal, East Arunachal, Central Arunachal, and Southeastern Arunachal. This road trip is all about experiencing the Golden Pagoda, Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh. However, it’s important to recognise that districts play an important role in understanding the state. There are 27 districts in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

To reach Arunachal Pradesh, I needed to leave West Bengal, cross Assam, and then enter Arunachal. It is a long road traversing the North Bengal Dooars, Assam’s humongous tea estates, and Kaziranga’s rhino country.

Arunachal Pradesh tourism is on the path to explode exponentially in the years ahead. However, presently, the region is unaffected by rampant tourism. The Tawang sector and places like Mechuka and Anini dominate the list of places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh. While West Arunachal (Tawang sector) receives many visitors, other parts of the state receive only a nominal number of seasonal travellers, thus preserving history. If you manage to reach Eastern Arunachal, the views will leave you mesmerised. If one persists, the reward is exploring Kaho & Kibitoo, India’s first villages.

Straight out of an AI-generated image, the landscape is dominated by lush green forests, towering mountain ranges, and deep valleys with shining rivers at the very base, which are mostly inaccessible. In Arunachal, distances are measured in time, not speed, because you are perpetually climbing up or descending the mountain.

Inner Line Permit – Arunachal Pradesh

I enter Arunachal after showing my ILP(Inner Line Permit) at Dirak Gate. Journey continues, my drive towards Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh. Surrounded by fertile lands where crops are grown in abundance, the entire scenic ecosystem is pleasing to the eye. Link to apply the ILP. The distance from Namsai to Tinsukia is 75 km, whilst the distance of Namsai from Dibrugarh stands at 123 km. To answer the query on how to reach Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh. I would recommend reaching Dibrugarh, Assam first, and thereafter one can prepare to enter Arunachal Pradesh.

Set in the foothills of Eastern Arunachal Pradesh, Namsai is a quiet yet culturally rich destination. It is most famously known for the Golden Pagoda Namsai, which draws visitors from far and near. But it also has a few other monasteries which showcase the influence of the Burmese Khamti culture. The name Namsai implies “Water and Sand”, in the Tai Khamti Language. Though, it is in Arunachal Pradesh, its proximity to the plains of Assam ensures that the landscape is more picturesque, with vast fields and rivers running through them.

What is my blog about?

My blog focuses on Indian culture, historical temples, and empires that have shaped India into what it is today. In addition to nature and offbeat destinations, focusing on our country’s history and culture is important for all of us to learn and be aware of. In this context, I would recommend a read on West Arunachal Pradesh, which remains a sought-after destination for many. While Arunachal still seems into the East, if one wishes, there is the beautiful town of Shibsagar, which was once the seat of the largest dynasty that ruled the Northeast-The Ahoms. I have written about these extensively out here.

Attractions in Namsai Town

Namsai’s appeal lies in its Golden Pagoda. It is also the district headquarters of Namsai in Arunachal. I arrived in Namsai in the late afternoon and immediately proceeded to Namsai Monastery, which is located in the heart of the town. The monastery was empty of visitors, which spoke of the few who came this far. Having the whole monastery to myself, I wandered through gardens, the prayer hall, and shrines, soaking in the feeling of having come this far to see something like this, which I would otherwise never have known.

Located in the heart of Namsai town, Namsai Monastery was the first prominent structure to come up in the area. It is situated within the Pariyati Sasana Buddha Vihara in Namsai. Surrounded by beautiful temples in a vast complex with other shrines.

The visitor sees sculptures inspired by Burmese Buddhism, wide prayer halls, and gigantic bells that spread the Buddha’s mantra far and wide. The thing about lesser-known Buddha temples is the silence and tranquillity visitors can experience. It totally makes the visit peaceful and fulfilling.

Thereafter, I proceeded to the Golden Pagoda, around 20 km away. When I arrived, it was early evening. Walking inside the well-maintained garden in the golden hues of the diminishing sunlight was a pleasure.

The Golden Pagoda at Namsai, built on the lines of the Burmese Buddhist temples, was opened in 2010. Thai Buddhist monks also visit the place on special occasions. The practices and ceremonies followed here align with those observed in Southeast Asia.

The Golden Pagoda is also known as Kogmu Khan. Within the main temple is installed the very beautiful statue of Lord Buddha, sculpted in the lines of the Kala Buddha from the Nalanda archives. The statue is made of pure bronze and was crafted by artisans from the Wat Aranjikavas temple in Thailand. There are four entrances to the Golden Pagoda’s main temple, each guarded by a pair of lion statues.

The main temple is surrounded by a beautiful garden with many flowering plants. At each corner of the garden, there is a shrine. In addition, there is a spiritual pond used for rituals during the Sangken, the water festival. The Sangken festival takes place in April at the Golden Pagoda, Namsai. This is celebrated by devotees who travel from all parts of the world to be here.

Final thoughts on Golden Pagoda, Namsai

So, there are two main attractions to visit in Namsai town. In addition to these, one can always immerse oneself in the natural landscapes that are very much a part of Namsai. I would also recommend that those visiting Namsai travel farther to explore the many treasures of Arunachal Pradesh. These are all lying ahead on the road from Namsi to the interiors of Arunachal. This is all from Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh tourism.
